Cockroaches: Facts vs Myths

Cockroaches are notorious creatures renowned for their tendency to rapidly infest homes, cause health problems, and spark havoc and fear. Because of their terrible reputation, most people are understandably disgusted by these pesky creatures.

Despite the negative press, cockroaches are actually quite useful creatures with an important environmental role, which many people are unaware of. They are a food source for larger creatures and help recycle extremely important nutrients back into the earth, including nitrogen.

However useful they are, many rumors are still being peddled around about these insects. Keep reading to learn if some of the facts you thought you knew about cockroaches are actually myths!

Myth: Cockroaches Only Invade Dirty Homes

There is a widespread misconception that cockroaches only live in filthy homes. This has led to many people not seeking professional help since they believe that their housekeeping and cleaning skills are the problem, and fear that they may be judged.

The truth is that roaches don’t care whether your house is dirty or clean. If your home will provide them with food, water, and warmth, they’ll do just fine. However, cleanliness is vital in the removal of cockroaches, as any competing food sources or hiding places will complicate the process.

Fact: Cockroaches Can Survive Without a Head

It’s a morbid fact that roaches can survive for up to seven days without a head. These creatures breathe through tiny holes in their bodies and have an open circulatory system, and don’t require a head to keep oxygen flowing through their body. However, without water, they’ll eventually die due to dehydration.

Fact: Cockroaches Cause Allergic Reactions and Make People Sick

Cockroaches can indeed trigger allergic reactions and cause various ailments. Their fecal matter and decaying bodies can trigger allergic reactions in some people with allergies. Additionally, they pass through sewer systems, dirt bins and toilets, where they collect bacteria that can spread illness.

Myth: Cockroaches are Immortal

Most people have tried to get rid of cockroaches without any success. This has made them believe that these creatures simply don’t die. While roaches do have some extraordinary abilities – such as living without a head for a week, holding their breath for 40 minutes and 30 minutes under water, and living for a month without food – they can’t survive more than seven days without water and can be controlled using pesticides.

Facts: Cockroaches are Nocturnal

It’s proven that roaches are active at night when you’re sleeping. They feed, mate, and loiter around at night. They don’t like the light, so they’ll try to hide when you turn on the lights. You’ll find them hiding in dark places such as under the sink, behind the fridge and inside appliances. Your house is likely heavily infested if you spot a cockroach during the day.

Myth: Cockroaches Would Survive a Nuclear Apocalypse

Cockroaches are certainly a bit tougher than a lot of other insect species, but they are not indestructible. They are more resistant to radiation than a human, but you may be surprised to hear that they are actually less resistant than some other insects like ants, scorpions or fruit flies.

Fact: Not All Cockroaches are Bad

Contrary to popular belief, not all cockroaches are dangerous to your health o a nuisance. Although thousands of cockroach species exist, only a fraction of these are considered pests globally. Those considered pests in the US are the German, American, Oriental and Smokey-Brown Cockroach.

Myth: Cockroaches Chase People Around

Some individuals have Katsaridaphobia (extreme fear of cockroaches) because they believe that cockroaches will chase after them. However, this is definitely a myth and cockroaches will never go out of their way to track you down. They might seem like they could be running towards you, but this is always going to be a coincidence or them trying to escape from something else. We are much more of a threat to cockroaches than they are to us, and they know it.

Final Verdict

The myths and facts about cockroaches might be interesting, but the bottom line is that you don’t want these creatures inside of your home. If you suspect that there’s a cockroach infestation in your home, don’t hesitate to contact a professional pest control company like Domain Pest Control to help you get rid of these pests for good!
