Mice

A mouse is one of the most widespread rodents in many parts of the world. Mice are nocturnal creatures, meaning they play and forage at night and spend the day sleeping. These pesky creatures are active all year round and thus can wreak havoc in your home or business throughout the year.

Mice infestation spreads fast since the female mouse can give birth to more than 150 babies in a year. These rodents are very dangerous to any household due of their destructive behavior. They eat up to 15 times their weight and waste half of what they eat. They can leave a trail of dropping which do not only make your house dirty but also carry diseases.

Although mice and rats are thought to be the same thing, they are technically two different types of rodents.

How to Identify Mice

Mice are often confused with rats because of a few similarities. However, one of mice’s distinguishing features is their size and weight, as mice are usually smaller than rats. They have a few other distinguishing features, such as:

Size: Mice are 3-4 inches long, with 3-4 inch long tails

Color: Mice come in a variety of colors like black, brown, tan, or grey. They usually have white hairs covering their undersides.

Bodily Features: Mice have pointed snouts, oversized ears compared to the body, furry bodies, and come with long tails that are often hairless. The tails are relatively the same size as their bodies.

Habitat: Mice are commonly found in structures around your home, such as under dog houses, storage units, piles of wood, and garages. Inside the house, the creatures hide in the basement, above the ceiling, under drywall, and inside the insulation.

Diet: Mice are omnivores and feed on various materials, including seeds, nuts, insects, and any food prepared by humans. There are also notorious for chewing indigestible materials such as books, wire cables, plastic, aluminum cans, and drywall.

Are Mice Dangerous?

Many people dread mice infestations because of their destructive nature. The rodents leave a trail of urine and feces that contaminate surfaces. Their urine, feces, and saliva also transmit salmonellosis and a respiratory ailment known as Hantavirus. Their fur and particles of their feces can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals.

These rodents also destroy ten times the food they consume. They also destroy household items such as books, drywall, insulation, electric cables, and wallboards, compromising the building’s structural integrity. These creatures can also tear up clothes and furniture, and are very difficult to control due to their fast breeding.

How to Prevent and Control Mice Invasion

Mice prevention revolves around tidiness and sealing your house properly. Here are the top prevention measures:

  • Keep the kitchen counters, cooking areas, and floors clean, and empty indoor trash bins every night.
  • Keep dumpsters tightly sealed.
  • Keep any grain-based foods in tightly sealed containers.
  • Seal all holes and openings in your house. Seal crevices with foam or caulk.
  • Keep any wood piles away from the house.

Prevention is better than control, but don’t worry if mice get out of hand. Domain Pest Control has experienced technicians with the skills and equipment to handle any mouse invasion. Give us a call today for a free quote on our general pest and rodent services!
